“It used to be that we had too many clients and not enough contractors to do the jobs,” says CEAP Senior Chores Coordinator, Diane, “but this year we have plenty of workers and not enough clients.”
CEAP’s Senior Chores program has been operating for over 25 years, and brings together seniors, and adults with disabilities, with able bodied contractors to help them do the routine home maintenance that keeps them independent. These chore workers perform dozens of services tailored to their client’s requests, including seasonal outdoor work, minor home maintenance, yard work, snow removal, and indoor housekeeping. In return, clients pay a $15 per hour service charge.
All workers are contracted and matched with clients through CEAP, and undergo a Minnesota criminal background check and interview. When asked why this year client use is declining, Diane says, “I think it’s just the economy.” With more people looking for work, and fewer people with money to spend, this year marks a challenge CEAP has not yet met.
